Front Page – Mother’s Day
In a week’s time we will be celebrating Mother’s Day. It is always held on the Fourth Sunday of Lent Laetare Sunday (Rejoice) and has its origins in this country from customs held since medieval times. It was a day when people originally visited their ‘mother’ church which meant the church where you were baptised. In more recent times those who were working in the service of others were given the day off to visit their mother church and they took the opportunity to meet also their family. From this the custom of visiting both ones ‘mother’ church and one’s mother on the day developed.
This new tradition of Mother’s day allows us to celebrate our mums and thank them for everything they do for us. We can also remember Mary, Mother of God and Mother of the Church. So on the 19th March we celebrate our halfway stage of our Lenten journey by honouring our mothers both living and death and Mary, Mother of us All.
I said a Mother’s day prayer for you to thank the Lord above for blessing me with a lifetime of your tender hearted love. I thank God for the caring you’ve shown me through the years, for the closeness we’ve enjoyed in time of laughter and tears. And so, I thank you from the heart for all you’ve done for me and I bless the Lord for giving me the best mother there could be.
