Transfiguration of The Lord

On Sunday 6th August we celebrate the Transfiguration of The Lord when Jesus takes Peter James and John up a high mountain to pray. The appearance of Jesus is transformed providing a powerful demonstration of His divine nature and the manifestation of His glory. During the experience Peter James and John see Jesus meet and talk with Moses and Elijah. They present the Law and Prophecies of the Old Testament.

The Transfiguration is recorded in each of the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke) and is before the Passion of Jesus. Although Jesus is divine Jesus does not avoid facing death and one that is so horrific so that as by his birth in circumstances of poverty He can relate to the whole of humanity in its experience of birth and death and bring Salvation to all. Through both the Transfiguration and the Passion Death and Resurrection of Jesus the faith of the Apostles is formed and matured so that they too can remain faithful to their Teacher and Friend during the opening years of the Christian communities following Jesus’ Ascension to Heaven and the coming of the Holy Spirit.
