Growing In Faith Together (GIFT)

GIFT (Growing in Faith Together) is an exciting way of supporting families to engage with their faith. Whether you are already engaged with your faith and the Church, looking for a way to become more engaged or seeking the sacraments for your child, GIFT is for you. Encouraging you to pray, talk about faith issues, and have more family time together is good, but we believe it is not enough.

We want to provide a place for you to learn what engaging with your faith actually looks like and then give you the opportunity to do it!

As parents, when your child is baptised, you agree confidently to accept the responsibility of training him/her in the practice of the Catholic faith. The Church has always maintained that catechesis, the passing on of faith, is the primary responsibility of parents. As your parish  family, we are here to work with, support and encourage you in this long-term process.

We can’t pass on what we don’t have!

The Church recognises that for many people, catechesis often ended when they were children. We all need help to understand our faith better and grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ. We can’t pass on what we don’t have! And all families are different. We know that many parents are not both Catholic and this too can be challenging.

How we can support you

We want to support you as a family to talk about faith issues and have more family time together. We want to provide a place for you to learn and engage with your faith.

How this works

Families are invited to come along on the second Saturday of each month at St Gerard’s school from 1.45 to 4.15pm. The sessions are  engaging, spirit-filled and fun, and they are for all the family! We will celebrate Mass, enjoy a time of fellowship and refreshment before sharing family friendly faith input followed by activities. Each month we will explore a different topic e.g. The Saints, Epiphany, Lent.

Who is GIFT for?

GIFT is for families with children aged between 5 and 11, whether you are already engaged with your faith and the Church, or seeking the sacraments for your child and you’re not yet as engaged as you would like to be. In reality, GIFT is for everyone aged 6 to 106!

The pathway to the sacraments

Engaging with GIFT will enable a family to discern when their child is ready to prepare for their First Holy Communion. We will no longer base readiness on a child reaching the age of 8 (Y3). When you, and we, feel your child is ready to receive the sacraments, we will support you with separate parent sessions and resources for you to prepare your children at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1 Is this another First Holy Communion Programme?

No. GIFT is designed to help parents deepen their own faith as well as their children’s faith. So while preparation for First Holy Communion is indeed part of this process, it is so much more as it involves the whole family. GIFT is not just another Holy Communion programme.

Q2 Is it only for parents with children in Year 3/First Holy Communion age?

No – GIFT is for families with children aged between 5 and 11.

Q3 How many sessions are there?

The reason we are investing in our young families is to help parents on their own faith journey.  GIFT is not a programme, it is a process without a timetable. As everyone is at a different place in their journey there are no set number of sessions.  GIFT will run throughout the year.

Q4 Do I have to come to all of the sessions?

We all have many demands on our time and we recognise this and     occasionally clashes will occur. However GIFT is important in your own faith development as well as your child’s formation, therefore we      expect regular attendance, and more importantly engagement.

Q5 How do I know when my child is ready to make their First Holy Communion?

Not everyone will be ready at the same time and part of GIFT is to     discern the readiness of your child, irrespective of age. When the time comes we will decide together when they are ready.

Q6 What are the alternatives?

If you feel that this is too much of a commitment at this time, you can always wait until you feel ready to be able to engage with GIFT as your circumstances change. GIFT will run throughout the year and you can choose to engage at any time.

Q7 When does GIFT start?

Saturday 14th 2026 March is when we have our first GIFT family session, you will be invited to sign up soon.

The parish family is here to help. Just like any relationship, the one with Jesus and his Church needs nurturing and supporting so that we can fully experience the life that was offered us when we were baptised. Through GIFT gatherings, Sunday worship, participation in parish life and praying and sharing at home, we hope families will grow in faith and help build a vibrant church. This is what GIFT is all about.

We look forward to welcoming you and your family to GIFT in March 2026!
